Henry David Thoreau Essays - Lecturers, Transcendentalism

Henry David Thoreau Essays - Lecturers, Transcendentalism Henry David Thoreau Henry David Thoreau American literature during the first half of the nineteenth century took many forms and ideas that still effect our ever so changing society today. Henry David Thoreau was among the notable writers during this time, and his impact of American literature will not soon be forgotten. His perseverance, love for nature, and humanitarian beliefs helped to mold the ideas and values of early American history. He was born in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12 in 1817. His parents, both abolitionists of slavery, were John and Cynthia Thoreau. During his childhood years his parents, along with Henrys older siblings John Jr. and Helen, often took the family on long walks though the valleys and hills of Concord. The seeds of Henrys love for nature were planted during this time. As a young school boy, at the Concord public school and later at the Concord Academy, many of his peers sought after him as loner who took everything too serious. In 1833 Henrys parents had saved enough money to send him off to college at Harvard University. Even though he barely passed the entrance exam, he would later become one of the top students in his graduating class. In 1836 financial and health problems forced Thoreau to postpone his studies at Harvard and seek a job. He taught school for a semester in Canton, Massachusetts and returned to Harvard in the Spring of 1837. He took a full load of classes that Spring and Summer semesters and graduated in August of 1837. After graduating Thoreau had no idea what he wanted to do with his education. After debating over many different careers he finally concluded that teaching would be his calling. He landed a position at Center School in 1837 in Concord, however he resigned two weeks later after many teachers and students complained of his teaching methods and strictness in the classroom. Over the next year he worked many small jobs around Concord, and also became friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson. The elder Emerson influenced Thoreau in his belief in Transcendentalism. Thoreau was indelibly marked by his mentors philosophy (Sanborn 122). In 1838 Henry and his brother John started their own public school in Concord. John taught English and math, while Henry taught science and foreign languages. The brothers had completely different teaching methods and often times came at odds with each other. Nevertheless, the school brought in more and more enrollment every year. In 1841 John became deathly ill and they were forced to close the school. It was during this time, while watching his brother die, Henry began writing the Dial. The Dial was mostly poetry and short essays written over the following four years. Despite the prolong struggle with John health, he died in 1842. The death of John stuck Henry severely. After his death Henry sought after his brother through travels in nature in remembrance of his brothers love for nature. In 1844 another unfortunate event happen when Thoreau and a friend, Edward Hoar, where camping in the Concord woods. Thoreau accidentally started a fire that would burn up a larough Thoreau could easily afford it he refuse and was sent to jail. Thoreau believed that he would set an example for the community in revolting against the tax. Eventually Thoreaus sister would pay the tax for Henry and get him out of jail. After living at Walden Pond for a year he once again ran into financial difficulties. He moved in with the Emersons, and later with his parents in 1947. Once again he found himself without a steady job (Paul 25). In 1848 he became somewhat of a professional in surveying and lecturing. Over the next five years Thoreau worked diligently on revising Walden and later wrote A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. The last fifteen years of his life he traveled much of the upper United States and Canada. It was also during this time that Thoreau became a strong advocate of abolition. He was one of the few that supported John Browns protests.Perhaps taxation and slavery were issues on which he felt compelled to take a public stand precisely because they were so clearly threats to the individual integrity and freedom of every American, whether free or slave. (Schnieder 23) In 1861 he became seriously ill with weak lungs. Doctors told him to go to Minnesota where the air was drier and easier on easier on his lungs. When he was well enough, he moved their with a friend named Horace Mann Jr. Shortly

5 Ways To Quit Panicking Before a Big Interview

5 Ways To Quit Panicking Before a Big Interview Interviews, especially for jobs we really want, can be incredibly nerve-wracking. Here are five ways to calm yourself down and walk in with the confidence you’ll need to land the job. Turn the voices offYour brain is probably playing a loop of what-ifs. Those have to stop. There are plenty of things you won’t be able to control, and there’s no use worrying about those. And there’s no sense worrying about the things you can control- try controlling them instead. Give yourself periodic reality checks and make sure you’re not spinning too far off into a fear spiral.Find your power placeYou’ll perform best when you feel at your best. That means being relaxed, confident, and tapped into what it is that makes you special. Figure out before the interview how to channel this feeling, and practice conjuring it up. That way, even when you’re in the hot seat, you’ll be able to access it and get into your groove.BreatheAs silly as it sounds , remind yourself to breathe. Nerves are a physiological response and your reaction to them can exacerbate the panic cycle. A few deep breaths can calm your autonomic nervous system enough for you to get back on track.Embrace rejectionFearing it won’t help you avoid it. Rejection is more common than not. The sooner you come to peace with getting a few â€Å"no’s for every ‘yes,† the better. Instead of feeling the shame, try embracing the positive: you tried, you may have failed, but you probably learned something worthwhile that will help you next time.See the personIt’s easy to view your interviewer as a robot or a super-villain holding the keys to your future and stingily not letting you in. But hiring managers are people too. They’d be delighted if you were the last person they ever had to interview. So connect on a human level, do your best, and remember: you’re just two people having a conversation. After enough interviews and buil ding this new calm and confidence, you might start to view them as a pleasant opportunity- something to look forward to!- rather than a thing to dread.

Painting, architecture and sculpture of British designers Essay

Painting, architecture and sculpture of British designers - Essay Example A huge spectrum of the art in the 17th century was introduced in Britain from Italy which relied heavily on the physical impression the art depicted. Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio are some of the first Italian painters who ushered the baroque style into Italy. They ensured that naturalism and classicism coexisted to bring the required impression through art and architecture. Churches were painted and decorated in the first baroque style at the time. The spiral staircases can be witnessed in a number of present day buildings in the UK; this was one of the first architect’s works of the baroque period. In Britain art began with stone carving and engraving by the Celtic tribes. Some of the artefacts in the national museum illustrate the beautiful shapes on swords and household goods, this continued until it was conquered by the Romans. The Roman regime introduced the patterned and mosaic approaches in constructions of some of the buildings in the UK. This period is closely fol lowed by the influence of religion which brings into perspective the concepts of illuminating manuscripts. In 1066 after the invasion by William of Normandy the buildings in London were characterised by rounded columns and semi-circular arches which a system is referred to as the Romanesque. Medieval and Gothic architectural styles were later ingrained in Britain’s art system. It is a specific class affair as depicted by the type of people who practiced the concepts, for instance William Morris was a trained architect.

Advanced Investment and Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Advanced Investment and Theory - Essay Example He identified that past, present and discounted future events can be found from market price but they show no significant relation with respect to price changes. According to him if the market cannot predict its fluctuations then it does assess them as being more or less likely and this likelihood can be found out mathematically. During the first half of the twentieth century there have been many emerging theories on speculative markets. But earlier literature did not sit easily with beliefs of practitioners. According to Bachelier the commodity prices vary randomly. Later Jones, Cowles (1937) and Working (1934) showed that the US stock prices also shared similar characteristics. But these studies did not surfaced out until the late 1950s. Many studies were done regarding the difficulty in beating the equity market. Cowles (1933) concluded that there was no evidence of any ability to outperform the market. He later provided evidence on large number of sample stock for longer time per iod and came out with similar results. Kendall (1953) performed an experiment on 22 UK stock and commodity price series. He found that in a series of prices that were studied at fairly close intervals the random changes from one price to another was so large that it ruled out any systematic effect. Basically the data behaved like a wandering series. This observation was inconsistent with the views of economist and it came to be known as random walk theory or random walk model. This led to a major challenge for the market analyst who tried to predict future path of security prices. Osborne (1959) studied US stock prices and found that common stock prices have characteristics similar to movement of molecules. Despite such evidence of randomness there were few instances of anomalous behaviour, certain price series appeared to follow predictable paths. This comprised of a

Enterprise Resource Planning Systems Essay Example for Free

Enterprise Resource Planning Systems Essay The enterprise resource planning system attempts to integrate or integrates all the data and also processes of an organization into a system that is unified. A typical system of the enterprise resource planning uses the multiple components of the computer hardware and software so as to achieve the integration. The key ingredient of most of the systems in enterprise resource planning is the usage of a unified database in storing the data for various system modules. Comparison between customer relationship management and supply chain management Similarities Both customer relationship management and the supply chain management are examples of modules in the enterprise resource planning system which formally would have been stand alone applications. (Monk and Wagner2006) Differences The data that is contained in the supply chain management software includes; inventory, commission circulation, order entry, claim processing, purchasing, inspection of goods, product configurator, supplies scheduling and the supply chain planning. On the other hand the data that is contained in the customer relationship management software includes; sales and marketing, call center support, customer contact service as well as commissions. On the other hand the supply chain management is a process of planning, implementing and controlling all the operations of the supply chain with a lot of efficiency. While the customer relationship management covers the concepts which are used by various companies in managing their relationships with the customers and they also include capturing, storing, analyzing the customers, vending, partnering and also information on the internal processes. The operational functions of the customer relationship management involve providing support to the front office business processes which include service and sales and marketing. The operational functions of the supply chain management includes activities such as; the daily production and distribution planning, sourcing planning, inbound operations, production operations and also order promising. (Monk and Wagner2006) The supply chain addresses problems on the distribution network configuration, the distribution strategies, information, inventory management as well as the cash flow. On the other hand the customer relationship management addresses the issues marketing sales and service. The customer relationship management has the capability of executing all the three sub modules through the multiple communication channels and the data that is gathered by the CRM considers the privacy of the customer as well as the security of the data. On the other hand the supply chain management components are the third elements of the four square circulation frameworks. Differences between financial accounting and managerial accounting Type of information and confidentiality Financial accounting mainly concentrates on the production of the financial reports which includes profitability, the basic reporting requirements, stability, solvency and liquidity. The reports of this nature can easily be accessible by the external and the internal users. On the other hand management accounting is a branch of accounting which deals with primarily very confidential financial reports for the restricted use of the organizations top management. (Monk and Wagner2006) Whereas the financial accountants follow the GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) that have been set by professional bodies in each country, the managerial accountants make use of the processes and also procedures that are not regulated by the standard setting bodies. On the other hand the multinational companies prefer employing the managerial accountants who have passed the certification in CMA. The certified management accountant (CMA) is an examination that is given by the institute of management accountant which is a professional organization for the accounting professionals. (Monk and Wagner2006)However the certification is very different and also unique from the chartered accountant certificate or CPA. Time period The managerial accounting provides the top management with reports which are future based while on the other hand the financial accounting provides reports that are based on the historical information. However even though the management accountants base their reports on the historical values they also employ the statistical methods so as to arrive at the future values. In both the financial and managerial accounting the enterprise resource planning systems benefits the workers in various ways. (Monk and Wagner2006) Information on the payroll of the sales people This information will be very useful in the management o the sales team in the Snackers sales department. This is because the manager will be able to know the consistency of each sales persons pay in relation to their performance. On the other hand such information will help the manager to pay the sales people according to the defined contract which could be inform of incentives, commission or a basic salary. (Monk and Wagner2006) Information on training of the sales people This information will be helpful in the management of the sales people since it will help in identifying the extent to which the sales people have been trained and also how far hey have been able to go with their training. This information is also useful since it helps in showing what the sales people have not been trained in and the consistency in their training. Such information will also be useful in the identification of the refresher courses on the sales people since such training is very important to the company sales and marketing strategies. (Monk and Wagner, 2006) Information on time and attendance of the sales people This information will help the management identify the employee’s trends in reporting and attending to their official duties. It will also help in identifying the employees who are consistent in their attendance and those who are not. Such information would be very useful especially when promoting the employees , increasing their   responsibilities, giving them incentives, taking any disciplinary actions and also in retrenchments and transfers. Information on the benefits of the sales people This information would be helpful to the management since it will give the basis of the benefits of the employees. Such information would help the company’s management to award the sales people with their correct benefits and incentives which they are entitled to during or after their term of service.

Slavery in the Caribbean :: Slavery Essays

Slavery in the Caribbean Caribbean Slavery gave planters and elite in the Caribbean the right to abuse a human by requiring ridiculously long hours of work on the fields and not providing enough nutrition. The article by Kiple and Kiple reviews the state of malnutrition among the slaves and the findings are atrocious. Slaves were lacking basic nutrients such as calcium, fats, and various vitamins. Kiple and Kiple, regardless of these facts, state that according to 18 and 19th century standards, these diets were not poor. Unfortunately I do not think in making this statement, the authors took into account that the standard person was not a slave. Slaves were subjected to physically rigorous work, which uses a substantial amount of calories, so the standard diet would not be fit for a slave, who needs a lot more calories and nutrients to remain healthy under the situation of slavery. Furthermore, it was only the African slaves who were able to withstand this lifestyle. Before trade began with African slaves, planters were utilizing Indian slaves from areas such as Venezuela and Nicaragua. It was found though, that the Indian slaves were dying very quickly and slave owners then discovered that African slaves were much more resistant to this harsh lifestyle, although their life span was far from long also. As is logical and expected, the growth of sugar plantations paralleled the growth of slaves. Interesting to me, is how plantation owners often had to buy the slaves on credit because they did not have enough to buy the slaves. A labor force could not be created out of island inhabitants, so planters had to turn to what they referred to as `cheap labor.' Planters also turned to African slaves due to social reasons. Because African slaves were brought from different areas in Africa, they were a very heterogeneous group in terms of language and culture. Therefore, it was more difficult to communicate in large groups among themselves. Instead, the African slaves had to learn the language of the European country that colonized the island. If the plantation owners were to use Creoles as slaves, who spoke one or two languages at most overall, and were a mainly homogeneous group, would communicate a lot easier and more often, making it more difficult for slave and plantation owners to contro l the Creole group. A question of whether Africans were chosen to be imported as slaves is presented in racial terms.

Cause and Effect: Comedy Genre Films and its Audience Essay

Genuine laughter is known by many to be the best universal medicine there is. It is the automatic cure for sorrow and sadness, the antidote to alleviate any emotional stress, the most inexpensive and may be argued as being the purest and most enlivening form of audible expression known to man. This has been the motivation of most forms of entertainment, along the lines of comedy and humor. In terms of film and genre, the power of comedic punch lines and witty comic antics matched with superb timing has the will to command boisterous laughs and thought-provoking ideas through humor. Though film representation of what is funny may vary, the interpretations that follow pertaining to what is laughable can be stretched from taking a particular scene within approval or dismay, and even in praise or disdain. The variant of comedy known as slapstick is probably the most identifiable form of humor in film. One of the earliest brands of comedy to be shown unto the silver-screen, slapstick’s effect on its viewers is indeed much more immediate and instantly and humorously stimulating. Filmsite.Org explains slapstick to be: This is primitive and universal comedy with broad, aggressive, physical, and visual action, including harmless or painless cruelty and violence, horseplay, and often vulgar sight gags (e.g., a custard pie in the face, collapsing houses, a fall in the ocean, a loss of trousers or skirts, runaway crashing cars, people chases, etc). (1) A solid film case of such a comedy would be Chuck Russell’s The Mask (1994) which starred Jim Carrey. He played Stanley Ipkiss, a local clerk of the Edge City bank, but upon his discovery of a rather supernatural item, in the form of a mask, it turns his life around, to say the least. As soon as he tries it on, he alters into a green faced, excessively fun loving, and extremely obnoxious individual. With Carrey’s expressive comedic demeanor and delivery with the Mask’s rowdy character features, the slapstick comedy is very well executed, and the film’s effect on its audience is more instantaneous—highlighting its purpose to amuse. His untamed manner even portrays a cartoon-like conduct which tickles the mind into more of reacting than analyzing the scenes by the audiences.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   On the other hand, there are films which rather choose to arouse audiences with a brand of high-browed comedy and almost insulting humor, still with the objective to entertain, but only in a different approach. Within the lines of cringe comedy, a comedy that is presented more on the lines of rather offensive depictions, the audience’s taste of comedy is tested. The interpretation of comedy indeed varies from the more traditional depiction of what is funny to how offensive a particular situation could be. Take for instance Larry Charles’ Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan which starred Sacha Baron Cohen. He played a Kazakh journalist who travels to the United States of America in attempt to experience the culture. But in the process, a series of cultural distortions are portrayed in the film, highlighting rather extreme and even distasteful situations wherein Cohen character, due to fictitious cultural gaps, would deliver outrageous comments and basically dare the social norms within his new environment. The film’s reception was one of debatable issue, and its content was deemed insulting by many, especially with the gender and racial issues.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   As the meaning of what is funny could and would differ, a simple understanding must be made known to all viewers: comedy is a form of entertainment. Whether it offends, stimulates thought-provoking themes, irritates, or makes its audiences feel good, it is all up to the viewer. It is all in the matter of perception—from beliefs, orientation, and sensibility. Works Cited Charles, Larry. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Two Great Men, One Common Goal essays

Two Great Men, One Common Goal essays How can a man be satisfied to entertain an opinion merely, and enjoy it (Thoreau 152)? North and South as well as different eras are united in Martin Luther King Jr. and Henry David Thoreaus pursuit of individual justice. They do not sit idly by as a moderate with an opinion, but demonstrate their disdain over the lack of government detachment over personal freedoms. Thoreau published an essay entitled Civil Disobedience in which King took his roots, but transformed his actions into a non-violent approach governed by the word of God. Henry David Thoreau resided in New England where we was a prominent member of the Transcendentalist movement in which Ralph Waldo Emerson was also involved. Thoreau took action and stood up for his beliefs in the lack of necessity concerning a war with Mexico. For his actions he spent a night in jail. Shortly thereafter he published his writing Civil Disobedience. Thoreau preaches to act out against the government when its treatment of its citizens is compromised or unjust. Hence Thoreau was opposed to slavery and would not allow slaves to return back to the South into the shackles their masters placed them in. In Selma, Alabama Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what he believed in by practicing a non-violent approach to Thoreaus novel idea of civil disobedience. King was raised in the South where religion is the key factor in ones life. He based his life off the teachings of Southern Baptism, Gods word is the highest. Man should not obey the Constitution in whole, but live by the words and teachings of their Lord and Savior. His actions were part of the Civil Rights Movement in which he was one of the most prominent participants. Great minds may think alike, yet one can always improve on their others ideas. Thoreau is governed by his own moral convictions whereas King is rooted in his religio ...

Data Collection and Management Techniques for a Qualitative Research Assignment

Data Collection and Management Techniques for a Qualitative Research Plan - Assignment Example The interview is without a doubt the most frequently used source of data in qualitative studies like my proposed research. This is particularly because it offers the one-to-one format of data collection and thus allows room for gathering more detailed information. Interviews range from the highly structured style, where questions are determined before the interview, to the one with the open-end, then the conversational format. In qualitative research, the highly structured format is applied primarily so as to collect socio-demographic information (Flick, 2006). In most cases, however, interviews are more open-ended and less structured. Interviews involve the interviewer asking the same questions to all the participants, but the order of the questions, the diction and the type of follow-up may differ significantly. In this regard, I will be required to establish a rapport with the respondents so as to build up trust and allow the respondent to open up his true feelings, thoughts and i ntentions. Another important qualitative data collection technique that I will use is participant observation. This method will require me as a researcher to be part of the study population and be learning from within the community to establish the important information that makes part of the research. This kind of data collection requires one to learn the modes and way of life of the study population so that it becomes effective. Data collected through such method can be written down in a field note in addition to taking video footages and used as the reference for evaluation and analysis (Creswell, 2003). Generally, observation in qualitative research involves spending time in the setting. Field notes are written throughout the observation with the focus being on what is seen. Data collection can also be done through the use of focused group discussion where the researcher identifies a topic and the respondents discuss it. Such responses are analyzed carefully to give important information relating to the research.Â
